Normally I space my strings starting in 1/8" in from the edge of the fretboard at the nut which works great on my 5/8" to 7/8" nut widths. Right now though I am building a guitar for a lady that has a nut width just a little wider than 1/2" (About .53") She had wanted it to be 1/2" but I couldnt see doing it that small. I remember Mario mentioning that on his guitar which is just a little over 1/2" he has the strings closer to the edge and am wondering how close you can go with the strings. 1/8" is just in too far for this little neck (strings too close together.) How close to the edges can I safely go for her?

You might be able to get away with as little as .080" if you don't put too much angle on your fret ends. .100" to.110" should work - that is as much as I would try. If you go too far, it is not that big of a deal as you can just make another one.
